My mother was a children's librarian, so there is something about the smell of old books and libraries that is really comforting for me. Now my husband would laugh and say it's just rotting paper but I don't think of it like that. So growing up there were several rules, one was you always had to be reading a book. Even to this day many years later when I live on my own, have 2 dogs, do my own laundry, make my own dinners, I still feel slightly stressed if I don't have a book I'm reading. About two years ago I hit the stage of babies (not me, but friends, relatives, etc), and I realized that I didn't really have a great set of cards for this stage of life. Now, babies are like weddings and birthdays, they require a lot of thank you writing; which is funny since they haven't learned to write yet.
So when I realized I needed to come up with a few cards for children or babies, I wanted them to be something that could be used for babies or young children and I immediately thought of classic children's literature. Check out the themes and see if you can guess all the books!
Among the many things I love most are my dogs. Now this is an old picture, and he is now several times this size but he still adorable and I tell you he has personality. We often say he is like Clifford the big red dog, we are not really sure when he will stop growing, but at the moment his nose reaches well above the table. I know I'm not the only American who adores their dog, so it seemed natural to create a dog card, and what better inspiration that real life. So check out how I made him into a card!
How did this all begin you may ask? Well When I was in kindergarten my mother received a phone call, "your daughter has failed the hearing test three times, we think you need to have it checked". As it turned out I really wasn't hearing much for the first five years of my life. As I think about how I see the world, it is in full color, everything is beautiful and inspirational in some way. I know that sounds cheesy but when people ask me where I get my inspiration for my patterns and art, I tell them everywhere. Life is inspirational, so my camera usually comes everywhere and I take lots and lots of photos; they are the way I remember what I've seen.
When I watch videos of myself from when I was little it is quite apparent that I lived in my own world, not because I didn't care about other things but I couldn't hear. So when people think I stare a lot, its not because I'm trying to be rude but I simply observe to process what's happening. I've become acutely aware to the people around me, and what they are seeing and I like to think what they are feeling. It should also be said that these videos of myself when I was little in my own little world, also make me quite aware of how I see things, I never think or see things in black or white or in a box, they are always full of color and endless possibilities.
